The 1970’s
Atex was founded in Massachusetts in 1973 by Douglas Drane and two brothers, Charles and Richard Ying, a couple of M. I.T. graduates who started out in a garage, they worked on an idea for a more flexible electronic composition system. By 1974 they had created a prototype video-display terminal, encased in a cardboard whiskey carton, which seemed to hold the potential for meeting U.S. News & World Report's specifications. Later that year USN&WR agreed to buy a system, which was operational within nine months.
Atex introduced a new classified front-end system for Newsday in 1975/76
In 1976/1977 Atex receives patents for Text Editing and Display Systems having new Text Insert Capability and allowing display of text on the screen so that every line ends with a completed word
Atex experienced explosive growth between 1978/79 and started development of new pagination systems for Newsday and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
