Fairfax Media established its operation in New Zealand in 2003 following purchase of the publishing assets of Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL).

The company has established itself as an innovative, integrated multi-media business with strong brands across multiple platforms including newspapers, magazines and digital.

Fairfax Media has two national, nine daily and more than 60 community newspapers, 25+ magazines, and market leading website stuff.co.nz.   Its New Zealand mastheads include The Dominion Post, The Press, The Sunday Star-Times, TV Guide, NZ House and Garden, and Cuisine.

Fairfax Media has over 21 different businesses based in New Zealand. These businesses include community, regional and national newspapers, magazine publishing, digital and print and distribution.  In New Zealand, its online businesses Fairfax Digital has leading online news and transactions websites Trade Me and Stuff.co.nz.

Fairfax Media New Zealand is a comprehensive user of Atex publishing systems. They have national Atex systems for Editorial, Advertising, Audience Development and Digital Asset Management servicing over 9 sites from central servers in Auckland.
